Week of November 3 - Adult Education Classes

Beginning Monday, November 3 our clergy will introduce a new and exciting year of adult education learning. Beginning with five weekly classes: three taught by Rabbi Cohen, one by Cantor Matis, and one by rabbinic intern Mitch Berkowitz. We hope you all find your curiosity sufficiently piqued to give at least one of these a chance…and see if the prospect of this kind of Jewish learning can speak as directly and as forcefully to you as it does to those who are teaching! Click here for our booklet describing these new and exciting classes.

Saturday, November 8, during the course of Shabbat Services, we will commerate Kristallnacht

The Shelter Rock Jewish Center will commemorate the observance of Kristallnacht with a Lunch 'n Learn program on Saturday, November 8, 2014. The guest speaker will be David Walker of Christians United for Israel (CUFI). The goal of CUFI is to educate and build Christian support for Israel throughout America and to educate Christians on the Biblical and moral imperatives to support Israel. CUFI provides a national association through which every pro-Israel church, ministry, college chapter, or individual in America can speak and act with one voice in support of Israel.

David will be discussing The Theological Basis for Christian Zionism; Why Christians Support Israel. As the National Campus Coordinator and Campus Field Organizer for the Eastern Region of CUFI David works on American college's campuses in the eastern half of the country, as well as in Texas, helping to train Christian student leaders to become advocates for Israel and the Jewish people. He is a gifted speaker and motivator.

After a shortened service, we will adjourn to the Kiddush room for our Lunch 'n Learn beginning at 12:00 noon.

Siddurim arrived in Uganda

"I did not find the world desolate when I entered it. My fathers planted for me before I arrivedso I plant for those who come after me.” TALMUD

Books received in UgandaIn our June bulletin we reported on the herculean effort of Joy Perla and Jim Stern, along with so many other members of our religious school, social action committee and general community to gather and ship a pallet-load of over 600 unused siddurim, machzorim, chumashim and children’s books to the Abayudaya community in Mbale, Uganda. According to Jim, “It was a four-month odyssey worthy of Homer (OK, Jonah if we need an Israelite parallel). Through donations from the Ernest Rothschild Educational fund, Sisterhood, Men’s Club and the children of our Religious School these boxes travelled from Roslyn to Linden, NJ to Dubai (yes, Dubai of all places) to Mombasa, Kenya to Kampala, Uganda and finally, to the remote village of Mbale – with delays and snags at almost every juncture.” In August, the books were received. According to Rabbi Moses Sebagabo, the spiritual leader of the Namanyonyi synagogue, “truly, this is a dream come true. When we met [Joy Perla] in Israel, I did not think that something like this will happen. Without your combined efforts, we would not get these wonderful gifts. I send a BIG THANK YOU to all those good friends who managed to make this possible.” Clip of books being received can be viewed by clicking here
