Siddurim arrived in Uganda

"I did not find the world desolate when I entered it. My fathers planted for me before I arrivedso I plant for those who come after me.” TALMUD

Books received in UgandaIn our June bulletin we reported on the herculean effort of Joy Perla and Jim Stern, along with so many other members of our religious school, social action committee and general community to gather and ship a pallet-load of over 600 unused siddurim, machzorim, chumashim and children’s books to the Abayudaya community in Mbale, Uganda. According to Jim, “It was a four-month odyssey worthy of Homer (OK, Jonah if we need an Israelite parallel). Through donations from the Ernest Rothschild Educational fund, Sisterhood, Men’s Club and the children of our Religious School these boxes travelled from Roslyn to Linden, NJ to Dubai (yes, Dubai of all places) to Mombasa, Kenya to Kampala, Uganda and finally, to the remote village of Mbale – with delays and snags at almost every juncture.” In August, the books were received. According to Rabbi Moses Sebagabo, the spiritual leader of the Namanyonyi synagogue, “truly, this is a dream come true. When we met [Joy Perla] in Israel, I did not think that something like this will happen. Without your combined efforts, we would not get these wonderful gifts. I send a BIG THANK YOU to all those good friends who managed to make this possible.” Clip of books being received can be viewed by clicking here

Shelter Rock Jewish Center's Early Childhood Center Celebrates Chanukah on Ice

On Sunday, December 21, 2014, Shelter Rock Jewish Center invited the Long Island community to celebrate Chanukah at the first annual Chanukah on Ice skating event and menorah lighting celebration at the new state-of-the-art facility Twin Rinks at Eisenhower Park. The celebration began with Israeli National Champion and Olympian Alexei Bychenko welcoming all of our guests and performing for the group. The young children of Shelter Rock Jewish Center Early Childhood Center hosted the event and along with their parents, friends and special guests, took the ice for skating classes with Jewish teens from the community, nationally ranked skating professionals and local skating stars. Following the skating session, Cantor Benjamin Matis joined us on the ice to lead a special menorah lighting for the 6th night of Chanukah with the children of the ECC, their families and friends. A wonderful time was had by all, and we look forward to making Chanukah on Ice a long standing tradition at Shelter Rock Jewish Center!
