Social Action / Green Committee

Committee Co-Chairs Susan Pavane and Steve Goldstein

One of our big events this year was the Shabbat of Inclusion on February 2. We hosted Rabbi Bradley Artson who spoke openly about the difficulties people with disabilities face in the world and in the Jewish Community. His strong conviction is that we create an environment that welcomes all people into our synagogue. To that end the Social Action Committee created large print siddurs, provides sound enhancing devices and supports the installation of a handicapped bathroom.

Our second big event, in conjunction with the Sid Jacobson JCC and eight other synagogue, was a community wide e-cycling day on April 13. Under the social action organization called TANS (Tikkun Alliance of the North Shore) we collected over three dumpsters of electronic equipment to be recycled. Many Shelter Rockers helped, including a Hebrew School Teacher and three of our USY teenagers. We continue to support the greening of SRJC.

This year we had an overwhelming response to our Social Action Committee Coat Drive. We needed an additional mid-month pick up because the big, black bags of coats were taking over the breakfast room. Through the Interfaith Nutrition Network these clothes were given to people in need in Nassau County who did not have adequate clothes for the winter months. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

We held our annual fall clothing drive; Pre-Passover food drive and Purim wrap a gift table. We are now planning for the Salute to Israel Parade where we will march up Fifth Avenue with the JNF Fire truck.

We hope you will find the Social Action Committee materials informative and use them as a jumping off point to try, in big and small ways, to make the world a better place - Tikkun Olum.

News From TANS (Tikkun Alliance of the North Shore)

The organization that brought you E-Recycling Day

The Tikkun Alliance of the North Shore (TANS)  has teamed up with Earth Aid Enterprises to make Long Island more energy efficient.. You'll save money on your utility bills - and we'll all benefit from a cleaner environment and a more robust economy. Visit http://coejl.earthaidkit.com/TANS/ where members of the JCC and each of the eight TANS synagogues (of which SRJC is one) can purchase any of dozens of items to make their homes, and lives, greener, energy efficient, and planet-friendly. This is a wonderful gift for any holiday, celebration or a child going off to college. And for each item purchased, COEJL will keep track of exactly how much greenhouse gas our alliance of Long Island synagogues is keeping out of our atmosphere! So please join us in a fun, and meaningful way to help stop global warming where it starts - in our own communities.
